One of the expenses involved in a wedding includes the money spent for the bridal party’s hair and makeup. Having said that, the bride is not the only person who needs a hair and makeup artist. A bridal party refers to the group of people who are very close to the bride and have been invited by her to be a part of the wedding as well as every important step that she takes during it. The bridal party includes individuals who have been assigned roles of the bridesmaids, ring bearers and flower girls. So, now we know that a large number of people get their hair and makeup done during the wedding. But, who pays for the bridesmaids hair and makeup?

As a general rule, it’s the bride who is supposed to pay for the bridesmaids hair and makeup as a way of thanking them for being a part of her wedding and helping her get through the nervous pangs and anxiety she went through during this time.

Is the bride responsible for the bridesmaids’ hair and makeup?

Yes, in most weddings, the bride is viewed as someone responsible for paying for the bridesmaids’ hair and makeup. However, in a lot of modern weddings, bridesmaids are considerate and have volunteered to pay for their own hair and makeup. When my sister got married, we were going through hard times and the budget for the wedding was tight. My sister’s bridesmaids were aware of our situation and in a bid to reduce some of the burdens that we were facing because of the wedding-related expenses, they offered to pay the hair and makeup artist themselves. Should bridesmaids get hair and makeup done?

Yes, bridesmaids do get their hair and makeup done. I have attended a lot of weddings in my career but never came across a wedding in which bridesmaids had not got their hair and makeup done. The bridesmaids remain by the bride’s side throughout the wedding day and help her get ready for the wedding both physically and emotionally. If you don’t have the budget to hire a hair and makeup artist for the bridal party, they could get ready on their own too. (Recommended article: “What is the Most Expensive Part of the Wedding?“)

Does the bride pay for the bridesmaids’ nails?

If the bride has offered to pay for the bridesmaids’ hair and makeup, then she might as well pay for her nails too. In most situations, when the bride is already paying for the other grooming expenses of the bridesmaids, she wouldn’t ask the bridesmaids to pay for getting her nails done. However, if the bride has set aside a particular budget for the hair and makeup session of the bridesmaids and cannot afford to go beyond that, then she could politely decline to pay for the bridesmaids’ nails.

How much on average do brides pay for hair and makeup?

On average, brides pay around $100 for their makeup. Getting their hair done costs around $110. While these are the average rates for getting hair and makeup done, the cost could vary depending on several factors. You might get a discount if you give the hairstylist and the makeup artist the task to get all the bridesmaids – and not just you – ready for the wedding. Since you are giving them a large number of clients to work with, they might give you a good discount on their services.

How much should wedding hair and makeup cost?

The cost of wedding hair and makeup, on average, amounts to around $300. However, there are different categories of hairstylists and makeup artists out there. For instance, a hairstylist who has two years of experience behind him/her would charge a lot lesser than somebody who has been around for decades and has styled popular public figures. You should start hunting for a hairstylist and makeup artist after deciding your budget.

Is it OK to ask your bridesmaids to pay for their dresses?

Yes, it’s perfectly fine to ask your bridesmaids to pay for their dresses. You might have agreed to pay for the bridesmaids’ hair and makeup, but you must know that buying dresses would cost a lot more than paying the hair and makeup artist. Dresses, that one would want to wear on a wedding day, are not cheap. Therefore, you must have a close look at your budget before you decide whether you are ready to pay for the bridesmaids’ dresses or not.

Who pays for the bride’s dress?

The bride and/or her family pay for her dress. Back in the day, it was a norm for the bride’s parents to buy her wedding dress. But now, with most of the women leading successful careers, they choose to pay for their wedding dress themselves. Though not very common, sometimes the groom or his family offers to pay for the bride’s dress as a token of their love and appreciation.
